Criteria for GT Identification

In order for students to be formally identified as gifted, a minimum on three pieces of evidence is needed from one of the categories listed below along with a committee recommendation. Academic areas must include a qualifying test score unless a child has a documented special consideration (e.g. disability, disorder, socio-economic issues, etc.). Students may qualify in more than one category providing they have three pieces of evidence and a committee recommendation for each category. This list is subject to change as Marshall County School District administers alternative assessments to evaluate student progress. Last updated for the 2020/2021 school year.

General Intellectual

  • Terra Nova Cognitive Skills Index (CSI) in the ninth stanine (2nd and 6th grade scores before Fall 2016)
  • CogAT composite score in the ninth stanine (3rd and 6th grade scores beginning Fall 2016)
  • K-BIT score in the ninth stanine (By request)
  • WISC-IV (By request)
  • Continuous progress data in academic areas
  • Teacher recommendation/Checklist inventories of behaviors specific to General Intellectual
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Committee recommendation for General Intellectual

Specific Academic Aptitude in Language Arts 

  • STAR Reading score in the ninth stanine
  • Continuous progress data in Language Arts
  • Teacher Recommendation/Checklist inventories of behavior specific to Language Arts
  • Alternative off-level testing score in the ninth stanine
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Samples of student product
  • Committee recommendation for Language Arts

Specific Academic Aptitude in Math

  • STAR Math score in the ninth stanine
  • Continuous progress data in Math
  • Teacher Recommendation/Checklist inventories of behavior specific to Math
  • Alternative off-level testing score in the ninth stanine 
  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)
  • Samples of student product
  • Committee recommendation for Math

Specific Academic Aptitude in Science

  • ITBS Science score in the ninth stanine

  • Anecdotal records (Teacher or parent)

  • Committee recommendation for Drama (Includes a critique from a drama expert outside of the recommending school)

Dance

  • V/PA Dance Self-Assessment
  • Performance tapes (at least 3 samples of student work)

The Marshall County School District Gifted and Talented Program works with V/PA teachers throughout the school district and the Marshall County Arts Commission to identify children with potential for giftedness in visual and performing arts.
